Helloooooo Fellow Bloggers!!!
Its been a while! Happy 2012!!
Please forgive me for the lack of communication and posting the last few months.
Since retuning from California and with the release of "Scribble-Tor", I just haven't stopped.... in fact it's STILL going on.
I just wanted to touch base and keep you posted with whats been going on.
But first of all, for your visual delight, here are a couple of sketch book samples to wet you pallet...

There is only a few for now, as i just haven't got the time right now to scan everything in. I just picked a couple I quite liked to share with you.... Plus, with the success of "Scribble-Tor", Im already planning a second book for CTNx-2012 so am saving lots of "unseen'' stuff for the book!! :P
For those of you who are interested in purchasing a copy of Scribble-Tor, It is currently only available in the USA, but if you are not in America, and can't wait for the UK release, you can buy it online from "Stewart Ng Books". If you happen to be in L.A, you can also purchase it, in store from "Gallery Nucleus".

I will be releasing Scribble-Tor in the UK at "Animex International Animation Festival" from the 6th-10th February 2012 and will be there to sign copies, portfolio reviews and answer questions. There is also going to be an exhibition of my original art work from the book and some of the work I did at Blue Sky, on "Rio".
I will also doing a presentation with the incredibly talented "Fraser McLean", talking through the process of his must have, new book "Setting the Scene". You can purchase "Setting the Scene following the link to Amazon. This is a book for any animation book junkie. It has everything you should ever need to know in regards to making an animated film, with the main focus being LAYOUTS/ENVIRONMENTS. With the forward written by Pete Doctor and hundreds of examples of production artwork, illustrations and quotes from all of the masters at Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks, Blue Sky etc, you don't want to miss this!

For those of you still waiting for your copies of Scribble-Tor, you have not been forgotten. Your books are waiting for you, i just haven't had chance to draw in all of them yet and get them posted out... but you will get them ASAP.

2012 is already looking to be a busy year, with lots of exciting things happening.
I have a few projects lined up and am busy scribbling away on other things, but for the time being, I'm keeping them all hush-hush.
One of the things i am really looking forward to is the release of Tim Burton's "Frankenweenie", which is due for release in October. I worked on the film as a Concept Illustrator/Designer back in 2010 and loved every minute of it. Its was a childhood dream come true to get to work on a Tim Burton Animation..... And to have him approve my work for the film was the cherry on top of the icing!! :D

Not much has been publicly released yet, but i can share one little snippet, which i found online at IGN.
I am proud to show the production still above, as this was a scene I actually worked on. What i find most rewarding is to see my hand drawn concepts and designs actually made into tangible models and sets. This was a very fun project to be a part of and I can't wait to see the final film come together.

What is also so nice, is to finally be able to put faces to names from the blogging world!! And what a pretty bunch (and very talented bunch) you all are!! :)
The show was a huge success, and all the talent on display was mind blowing. I had an incredible time and am already planning a 2nd book for CTN 2012!! I can't wait to do it all over again!! :D

Also, I must say an even bigger Thank you to all of you who purchased something from me. By the end of the show I actually sold out of "Scribble-Tor"!!! I couldn't have been more grateful to you guys!! Thank you so much!! :')

Its Nearly Here....

So, its been a labour of love, but its finally now on its way... Its out of my hands now. My first book "Scribble-Tor", went off to the printers yesterday, and will go on sale next week, hot off the press for the first time at CTN expo in Burbank, California. Its limited edition, so will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. There is only 1000 copies, each individually numbered and hand signed, and if you ask me nicely, you might even get an original 'Tori Cat scribble' in there too :)
To begin with, the book will only be available at the CTN, making it exclusive to the expo. After the show has finished the book will then be available to buy via my blog. I will keep you posted on how and when you can purchase online. I hope you enjoy it. Its the first time i have ever done any thing like this. It been because of the amount of people who have asked me "Have you got an art book out", that i finally took the plunge!! All feed back is very much welcome. Thanks for all of you who have shown interest in it, i and i just hope i haven't let you down. :)

And for the first time at CTN, I will also be releasing my newest creation, "JesTor". A collaborative range of hand made jewellery. Its already selling like hot cakes, and its becoming very popular, especially with Christmas just around the corner. Again, it will be sold on a first come, first serve basis, and I will only have limited numbers of each piece with me, so you need to be quick....but, i will be taking orders. :)

I will also be selling prints of my art work, as well as magnets and doing commissions. I am really looking forward to the show, and cant wait to see old friends and meet lots of new ones too :)

A quick doodle to wish him a very special day among the stars.

I would have loved to clean this scribble up, adding all the detailed clutter around him, but i'm currently racing against the clock to get lots of jobs done before CTNx in just a few weeks time. I have posted this scribbled version now, as i wanted to send this message on the actual day and, where ever he may be, i like to believe that he still regularly reads my blog and will see it. :)

Thanks to all of you who have been in touch. Please forgive me to every one i have not replied yet.

I'm so busy finishing off my book, working on commissions.... and still in a lot of pain, recovering from my recent surgery.... there just isn't enough hours in a day!

I really appreciate all the love and support and cant thank you all enough. I will get back to you all ASAP.

Here's a side note: To all of you local to the midlands area, "Flip International Animation Festival" is taking place in Wolverhampton this week from Thursday 27th - Saturday 29th October.

I will be among a guest panel of industry professionals leading a discussion on 2D animation.

I will also be exhibiting some of my work at the show and will be doing commissions too, so if your free or local to the area, please drop by! It would be great to see you!

Mis-Mash, Monster Mash (Part Two)

Hey you guys!

My scanner is working again!! YAYIE! So, i thought i better get the other half of the last post scanned in and blogged for your viewing pleasure. :)
So, here we go...

The life drawings are all drawn in charcoal and are 30-40 minute poses.

As i can not get out as much as i would like, due to my recovery, i have referenced a model from www.pixellovely.com. I kept strictly to the time limit and treated it just like a real life class.... It's a good substitute when your too poorly to get out the house, but want to keep up with you anatomy studies! :)

The next 3 images are from my sketch book. There is a sheepdog (Or as i call them "Sasha" dog's, after my own pet sheepdog). Drawn lightly with pencil then inked in with a nib and ink washes. I doodled this from the top of my head, just for fun. Iv used Photoshop to add a block of tone behind the dog, to make the image stand out a bit more.
Next is the last bunny who sadly didn't get scanned in from the last post. Drawn from life at the pet shop in pen, pencil and Pro -Marker.
The last image was drawn with a nib and ink with watered down brush washes at Disney land in California. It's the ride "Tower of Terror" (The writing on the building is supposed to be wonky) ;)
I drew this in the Californian sunshine, whilst in line for the ride.

OK, this is all i am going to share for now. I have more to show, but am saving them for my new book (which i'm currently putting together). To see them, i'm afraid you will have to wait until my book comes out in November. It will go on sale for the first time at CTNx. After the show it will be available to buy here on my blog. I will have more details closer to the time. Thank you so much for every one who has shown interest in it. I am very excited about its potential and really hope it will go down well with all you guys out there in the real world :)

I must also say a huuuuuge thank you to every one who has been in touch in regards to my jaw and recovery. Its really uplifting to see how many of you care and is very encouraging in helping me get back to work. Thank you!! I am so incredibly grateful to all of you and really appreciate all your thoughts, prayers and lots of love.
As for my recovery, its very painful and slow, and i must admit, it can be really tough to keep focused on my artwork whilst in so much pain.... but like i have said before, i'm a tough cookie and it will take a lot more than a broken jaw to make me crumble! Mu ha ha haaaa!! :P
On a serous note tho, I will be going back to hospital this week for more treatment, so fingers crossed this will help with the pain.

I am so happy for all of the support you guys give me. Getting stuck into my art helps take the focus off the pain im in. I love what i do and get so much enjoyment out of it, and its a really wonderful feeling to be able to share what i do with others and get so much positive feedback back. :D
Iv got a few other tricks up my sleeve which i will be sharing with you in the near future. Once my book is all complete, i'll reveal more.... So, watch this space :P

Mis-Mash (Part One)

Hi Folks!Its been a while since my last post.Had a very hectic and rough few months... Iv been working in LA, Exhibited at 'San Diego, Comic Con', Had major surgery on my face, Faced 'another' family death, Started composing my first "SketchBook" (Limited 1st edition, to be released at CTNx in November 2011) and much more....
In-between all of this, i have tried to squeeze in a bit of drawing.... :)
So, as its been such a long time since i last posted, i though its about time i update you all... Sadly Its a random "MISH MASH" for now, as my scanner packed up, just as i got started with my scanning... So just a couple of sketch book scribbles and a life drawing is all your going to get for now...Sorry!! :(

A few sketch book pics of some bunnies at the pet shop. I was sat in the shop for over an hour watching my fluffy friends... Bunnies are fun!! :)

As my scanner packed in, after only getting to scan one life drawing, i decided to go into the one i did have and chuck some tone on it digitally.

EDIT: Looking into the digital tone piece, i think i may have really over worked the rib cage. I may go back into it and make her less "Ribby".... or i might just leave it and keep on Moving Forward!!? :D
I only decided to go into the line work when my scanner packed in, and i fancied doing some "colouring in" to ease my frustration. :P hee hee

OK, for all of you quite sensitive, look away NOW....

Here are a few snaps of the results after my big opp! These are a few, "Less Gory" pics, a few days after the surgery, when i'm starting to look a little more 'human', but a little more 'swollen/poofy cheeked'.
(For all of you who don't know, 4 weeks and 400 stitches ago, i had my 6th operation in the last 3years on my jaw... This time i had a full "Jaw Replacement". Now, rocking a Titanium Jaw! :) Hopefully, this will be my last operation!! Fingers crossed!
Still in alot of pain, as its gunna be a long recovery, but good news is, i'm healing well and i will not let a "Mere Scratch" get in my way!! Nothing will come between me and my pencil! :P

1. (RIGHT SIDE) 4 Days after surgery.
2. (LEFT SIDE) 4 Days after surgery.
3. (LEFT SIDE) 6 Days after surgery. Drains taken out and patched up

OK Folks!!Thats all for now!For all of you who have kindly been in touch with me and had no reply,You can now see, just how busy i have been. Im still in the early stages of my recovery and have good and bad days, BUT I will be in touch with all of you who have contacted me, as and when i can!! :DLike always, Thank you all so much for all the love and support you have all shared with me.Especially for all the kind messages i got in regards to my last post. Tribute to a Sleeping Bear...

Just a few days into my recent trip to LA, i was struck with the tragic news that my Grandfather had passed away.
I was VERY close with 'Grandad' and was deeply saddened to hear this news. I came back home to England as soon as i could, so i could be with my family and be there to read at Grandad's funeral.

My Grandad was known as "The Bear" and any one who ever met him would know why. He had great big loving paws, and gave HUGE Bear hugs. He was an ex-police man, standing way over 6ft tall and had a huge appetite. Pork pies being one of his favorite 'Bear Snacks'!!
He was so special to me and a huge part of my life. I will never forget the computer classes he took, just so he could learn how to write me emails and keep up to date with my latest art work on my blog... This is why i am making this post.... So he can continue reading my stories up in Heaven and know just how much he is already missed.
He was so loving and kind and helped support me in every possible way. His dream was to see me succeed in life and with my animation career... in which I plan to continue making him proud in every way.
I know he is never far away and is always watching over me. He is very much alive in all our hearts. His body has just done what all bears do and has gone into hibernation.

I will be going back to LA in the morning to continue with my work, and pick up from where i left so suddenly just a few weeks ago.... But my main reason for heading back, is so i can continue making my Grandad proud.

Sleep well 'Old Bear'. Love you for eternity. God Bless you always. Amen.xxx

This is a bit of a jumbled post as, im trying to tie off a few loose ends before i jet off to the USA... in aprox 6hrs time!!
So, here we go...

These two pieces above are development pieces for RIO. The Line drawing is just the "Layout" (minus my character designs) for one of the visual development pieces i posted earlier. It is all completely my original work, concept and design... The coloured version is by the incredible Sergio Pablos.
Sergio Designed the Characters for Rio and helpled create the look and design of the film.
His colour ans lighting is incredible and he wipes the floor with my characters!! He is a very inspiring artist and it is a complete honor and a real credit for him to work with my concepts.... and the fact he kept my layout EXACTLY as i had drawn it made me very happy :)
This next series of images shows my process, as to how i would develop one of my concept pieces on Rio.

This is all completely my work, from rough thumbnails and character designs to the final line and marker pen finish.
Ok, Posting is taking a lot longer than i had anticipated, and i've got a flight to catch.... so i'll have to cut it short for now.... Hopefully iv left you all with a few new scribbles to keep you busy for now.
I'll continue to post whilst im in LA and keep you all up to date with my latest doodles etc.

Im very busy at the mo, getting ready for LA and with work etc, so i haven't had as much time as i would like to get on with some of my own personal scribbling...
But to keep my blog alive and kicking, Here is a handful of recent drawings from my dusty sketch book. They are scribbles from a zoo/petting farm i visited recently.
Before i head to the West, i'll make sure to get my blog up to date, with lots more Rio vis dev and a few little goodies i'm currently working on.

"Rio" Visual Development (Part 2)

A wee bit more of some of my Visual Development work for "Rio" which i did for Blue Sky Studios back in 2007, and watch out as i have lots more to come soon!! (There is just so much work to go thru and post, its taking a loooong time to organize it all!)

"Rio" Visual Development (Part 1)

As Blue Sky's "Rio" has now been released i am aloud to share some of the visual development i did for the film back in 2007.
I have loads to go through and will get round to posting lots more as soon as i have more time.
I wanted to share some of my artwork now, as i have been receiving lots of wonderful messages from people who have seen the film and wanted to congratulate me for my contribution to it.
Some of my you may know, that i co-directed a short film "Favelados" (which is also set in Rio) back in 2007. After completing Favelados, Carlos Saldanha (The director of Rio) hired me as an environmental designer to mainly focus on the visual style of the shanty town and market.

It was an amazing opportunity and fantastic experience working with Carlos and the rest of the team at Blue Sky.
I am very happy to see the film finally complete. It looks incredible and it was an honor to be a part of it.
I must say a massive thank you to Carlos for hiring me, and wanting to work with me and also thanks to all the amazingly talented artists at Blue Sky for their incredible hard work and their kind support.

I'll be posting some more of my work for Rio in the near future as well as my finished Edward Scissor Hands tribute piece for Gallery Nucleus and more!

Scissorhands 20th Anniversary (PART 3)

So, i'm currently running a little behind schedule at the moment...
Here is my piece after 'Day 1' of painting. Sadly it hasn't gone according to plan, as i have found my ink lines tend to smudge when i add water to them and the paper isn't absorbing my paint as nicely as i had hoped. (I was sure i had tested the ink with water before i cleaned it up) Grrrrr!
So, because of this little unexpected hiccup, i have had to change my method of painting.
Usually i would paint the picture as a whole and build up all the fine details with layers upon layers... but as i am washing away my detailed line as i work... i am finding i am working my way across the picture, concentrating fully on just one section at a time.
I wouldn't advise usually painting this way, as you almost forget about the 'big picture' and can waste time 'faffing' on minor details like i have found myself doing so far.
My scanner sadly has not picked up the silver paint i have used for Edward's scissor hands and the nice grain in the paper. It has also seemed to bleach out a lot of the subtle tones. ;( Once it's finally complete, i'll try scanning it in at a higher resolution, in hope that the finer detail will shine :)
The top left hand corner is still far from complete, but i am going to start moving into the other sections now, otherwise i'll end up 'faffing' over eyebrows and tiny lines, no one can even see. I'll go back to the finer details later.
Hopefully, i'll be a bit happier with it after after 'Day 2' of painting ;)

Scissorhands 20th Anniversary (PART 2)

I have now finished drawing up and inking in all the detailed line work. Next step... Painting time!!
I am running very close to the deadline for the show's submission date, so i must get straight back to work!!!
I will be posting the finished and framed piece at the end of the week... As long as i finish in time!!! :P

Scissorhands 20th Anniversary (PART 1)

I am currently working on my piece for the up-coming exhibition at Gallery Nucleus celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Edward Scissorands.
I must have my piece finished in the next few days, so it can be shipped off to the gallery in time for the show. At the exact minute, i am waiting for the ink to dry on my piece so far, so i thought i'd use this free time i have, to share with you, my step by step progress of how my piece is coming along. From the first thumbnail to the final framed image.
I'm just past the half way mark, so make sure you check back real soon to see the finished piece for the show.

This piece below is the final Digital thumbnail that i have worked into and loosely rendered up. This is in preparation for the traditional piece, i am now currently drawing up with pencil and ink. Once the line work is done i'll get that up ASAP, along with the next stages, as they follow....

The two images below are the initial thumbnails i designed in creating my piece. For the beginning stages, i have worked digitally as i find it much easier and quicker to edit and rework my design. I started with the 1st image down and then worked into it a bit more further down. I actually then posted the second image on my blog for a short while to get some constructive feedback. Then, taking note from the comments i received, i then re-worked the second design and produced the more advanced image above. Thank you so much to every one who left me a comment and helped advise me as to where i could possibly take my painting next.

HLP JPN

This is my contributing piece, to a pack of cards currently being put together by different artists at Aardman. The cards are going to be sold to raise money to help support Japan after the devastating tsunami that shook the country last Friday (March 11th).
If you are interested in purchasing a pack of cards to help support a much needed cause, please either contact myself or my buddy, Ashley Boddy.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people of Japan and any one effected by this disaster.

EDIT: There is going to be an exhibition hosted at Cafeand in Shoreditch May 7th - 22nd 2011 to help raise money for the people of Japan. The Exhibition is called "Animators Vs Earthquakes" and has been organized by Paul Nicholson & Sylvain Marc.
"Animators Vs Earthquakes" is in aid of 'Artists Help Japan', a charity created by Pixar's Dice Tsutsumi.
I have individual prints available for sale of my piece above and the framed original is going to be included in an auction at the exhibition, all in aid of raising money for the charity.

Back to Reality...

This week whilst visiting a friend in London, we randomly went to a life drawing class. It was a beginners class, so i felt a lot more relaxed, especially as the model only did long poses. Prior to this, i have recently spent a lot of time getting back to basis and focusing on anatomy and using different materials. I want to get back into the routine of attending weekly classes... I didn't realize just how much i have missed it. :)

I worked on the pre-production of the short nearly a year ago now. I was responsible for the background / concept / colour designs. It was a great honor to be included in its making and I am very happy to see how well it is already being received. In just a few short days, live on the net the film has made it onto the front pages of Vimeo and Catsuka.

2 Minutes of Rio...

Here is an exciting little preview for the first 2 minutes of Blue Sky's new feature "Rio".
I worked on the film as an Environmental Designer, helping to design the shanty towns. Hopefully in the next few months, i will be aloud to share some of the designs/concepts i did on my blog. :)

1st New Years Resolution.... Finish this dam picture!!!

Happy New Year Folks!!! Here's to another roller-coaster year of events, highs and hopefully not too many lows!
This pic is still looking a bit crude. It was a Christmas commission i was asked to design and paint a few weeks back, but have still not finished it. I've been very busy working on a few other tricks iv currently got hidden up my sleeve (all will be revealed soon).

So, like i said, this is not the final image as im still working into it, eventually aiming to erase all trace of solid line and having simply colour do all the work. I still need to add vibrant highlights and really push my colours but its slowly getting there.

Hope every one had a wonderful Christmas and all the best for a very happy new year ahead!! Lets hope it's a gooden!!

Here is a link and a sneak peak at "Rio". I worked as an Environmental Designer on the film, back in 2007 at Blue Sky Studios, when it was originally pitched! It is very exciting to see it nearly finished!! Congratulations to Carlos and all the team!!

Sorry I have not been around much lately... Have been very busy. I have recently come back from a last minute trip to LA, where I worked at CTNx. I shared a booth with a great friend of mine (and incredible artist), Craig Elliott. Had a fantastic time and met so many wonderful artists and new friends. I have loads I want to share with every one who reads my blog, but am snowed under (quite literally, as the UK is littered in the white stuff at the mo) with work. Iv got a few commissions I'm currently trying to get finished in time for Christmas as well as all the usual family visiting, wrapping pressies and festive tings you do this time of the year. I've also got some very exciting news to tell... but you will all have to wait and see for now... (I don't want to jinx my luck).

Here are just a couple of snaps from my many recent adventures...
This pic is Craig Elliott and i at Ken Dunken's Studio when he invited us over for a visit! He's a great guy with an awesome studio and team!! Thanks Ken!! We had a Blast!!
This shot is pretty clear to any one, who like me, have had a dream of one day working here. Craig has worked for Disney Feature Animation for many many years, and kindly had me invited to the studio to see whats going on beyond those magic gates!! We also got to watch an advanced screening of "Tangeled" at Feature Animation, along side many of the amazing artists and directors who worked on the show!! I never wanted to leave!!

These few snaps are from a short break in Paris at Glen Keane's exhibition at Galerie Arludik as well as Craig Elliott's an David Colman's exhibition too!

"Paris- Part 2"

Finished!!! This Layout has taken me much longer than I ever anticipated. It started of as fairly simple layout, inspired by the wonderful and quirky buildings in Paris. I then started adding in little bits of detail, which then grew into more and more until I couldn't stop adding in every single window pane, brick, flower basket and chimney pot. Its been a beast to complete, but I'm happy i can now call it a day.

Below is a simple sketch, taken straight from my mole skin, which i am NOT going to go back into.... well, for now maybe ;)
It's been fun and guess what... I'm back in Paris right now, as i make this post... So you never know... looks like there will be more to come!!! Watch this space!!! :)

"Paris- Part 1"

I have recently been on a few romantic weekend breaks to Paris over the last few months, visiting the other half who is currently working out there. I love every thing about Paris, but most of all is it's artistic culture. It is a beautiful city and so inspiring to draw. I have a few more sketches to come, as I'm currently finishing off a couple of inspirational drawings of the city and it's environment. But, for now I wanted to get the ball rolling, so here is my first 'Paris Post'.
It is the view from the apartment window. I loved the contrast from the bright city lights below to the dark moonlit sky.
I originally took a photo (TOP RIGHT) on my phone, but it never gave the sight and colours justice, so thats why i decided to play the hand of God and pick the colours myself. Ok, so the picture ended up being more of my imagination towards the end, but in my head, thats how i remember it. (TOP LEFT). Below is a close up section of my painting.
Keep a look out, i'll get "Paris - Part 2" up as soon as all the details and trimmings are finished. :)

So, with a bit of time on my hands, it's given me the chance to catch up with some on going, personal, side projects.... Which this means... out comes "Banjo Raccoon". If you are a regular reader of this ol' blog, you will have noticed Banjo's character development through out the last two years of my blog. WOW, looking back, his design has changed a fair bit!

In between other scribbling projects, I am starting to animate this wee lil critter. Sadly, I have never had the chance to fully commit to the scene, due to other more important, workry type stuff that has been main priority. Keep your eyes peeled tho, as I will have a snippet of complete 'Banjo Raccoonage' animation, coming soon. :)

Any way, as for this post, I am trying to develop a visual style for Banjo. He is a 2D animated character, and I am playing with styles/concepts for how his design visually comes across, and what is most readable for animation purposes.
The 2nd design would be near on impossible to animate in 2D with all the individual hairs.... Im not so sure about this design in general really, but i though I would throw it up here to see what people think.....So what do you think? Be honest! Im a tough cookie!! ;)

I am pretty happy (for the moment) with Banjo's character design, but am interested to hear what you, the wonderful people out there in the blogging world have to say about him. All critiques are very much welcome!! just drop us a line!!

"Sock like Qualities...."

Ok, this will probably leave you asking many questions..... that is the point.
It is based on a conversation i had with my tutor during my final year at University.

Basically.... When i asked my tutor "Peter Parr" for his opinion on my first digital painting, he told me the painiting looked "Flat and trapped behind glass". I didnt quite understand..... i'd put my shaddows in there and the lighting was right????

He used an example to describe digital painting to me. He said the painting had no texture and lacked the traditional painting qualities.... He said it reminded him of someone with a pair of tights over their head, where all of their features had been squashed and merged behind the material.

Pete had always favored the idea of me as a traditional artist, but due to time etc of the modern way of working, i have had to pick up digital painting as a much needed prop of the concept artist's tool box.

I have remembered this conversation ever since, and now, when ever i paint, i always try to give a picture texture or some kind of ''Sock'' like quality.

I lived in Scotland for just over 2 years, during the film's production. I worked on The Illusionist for year, and was forever blown away by the style, immaculate attention to detail and of course, some of the best 2D animation i have ever seen.

Well done to every one who worked their socks off, to make "The Illusionist" such a beautiful and wonderful film.

"Drawing Inspiration"

These few images are visual development, pieces i have made for a short flash animated film, currently in production at Partizan, called "Drawing Inspiration".
The film is being made in Soho, London and should be finished in the next few months. Keep an eye out for it.
You will notice, the styles are pretty different to my usual way of working, which were really fun to make. I was able to step away from the computer for a change and dive into my "REAL" paint box and splash out using traditional watercolours.

I havent had much time to post this year, as i have been so super busy at work, and in life too.

Currently I'm back at Uli Meyers, Story Boarding and designing, Visual Development pieces for Domestos. As always, its great fun at Uli's. I really enjoy the work, the people there are fab, and as always, I have a blast! Thanks for always having me back Uli!

I'll be going back into hospital very soon for more treatment on my jaw, so it could be a few weeks before I post again, but stay 'tooned'... got lots to post ASAP.

Sylvain Chomet's new 2D feature "The Illusionist" is finally finished. I worked on the film up in Scotland as a Digital artist for a year. Follow this LINK to see finished shots from the film (Some of which i worked on) and Sylvain talking about the project.

It's a beautiful film with some of the best animation I have ever seen in my life. Lets hope, 2010 is going to be the year that brings hand drawn animation back to life....

King of the Jungle

FINALLY FINISHED!!!! I have been illustrating a book for "The Lion Man - Big Cat Trust", in aid of raising money to help the protection of Big Cats.

The final image is a portrait of a lion named "Sampson". Sadly he has died now, so this is a little tribute to him to add to the collection of others.

Sampson belonged to a pride of lions called the "Wild Pride". You may notice the slightly wonkey eyes and battle scars... if this old boy could talk, I'm sure he would have hundreds of stories to tell.

Back at the Zoo Again...

I love Tigers, i can sit there and just watch them for hours. Beautiful creatures with so much pride and dignity. I was able to catch a young one who was watching me draw. I think he was a bit of a show off.
As for the penguins, they are soooo funny. So unbelievably animated in every thing they do. They waddle and dance around, so happy and oblivious to everything else around them..... kinda like me! Hee hee!

Apple Bobbin' Bears

Feeding time at the zoo... and this was my que to get scribbling! These huge hairy beasts were bobbing for apples.
It was so funny to see the bears cower at the waters edge. They wanted the apples, but were refusing to get wet. Hee Hee!
In the end, the hungry bears took the plunge.... and brassed the icy Scottish waters. This was so much fun to watch.

I spent a good hour watching my little fury friends, getting plenty of inspiration for my own character "Banjo Raccoon".

Im still supporting a broken jaw, and with all the meds im currently taking, and lack of food i can eat, it's been really getting me down. The photos below was taken just recently, after having my 1st operation (of sadly many more to come) to try and fix my poorly broken jaw.

Well, as long as i can still hold a pencil and draw to my hearts content.... I'll be happy. I'm a tough cookie!!

Tribal Village.... Work in Progress

FInished!!! I decided to stick with the vibrant red pallet as i loved trying something at bit different.
I have painted the final image in a different style to how i would usually paint. I have stuck with bold, flat, colours, and have payed little attention to the detail in the foreground, making the fire the main focal point.
This has been a fun treat to get stuck into whilst i am currently recovering from an operation. I could take it so much further, by trying different painting approaches, even adding characters...etc but i think for the time being, i'm ready to move onto the next big thing.....

3rd Colour Thumbnail. Midnight Blues, again completely changes the atmosphere. I feel this pallet has slightly more depth to it. Its good to try different colour pallets, rather than just settling with your first choice. Personally so far, I have really enjoyed the vibrant Reds in my 2nd thumbnail, to set the mood for the finished image.
Final Stage, now in progress. Come Back Soon....

2nd Colour Thumbnail. Vibrant Reds etc, create a sense of intense heat and danger. I'm enjoying the fear these colours bring to the scene, where as the greens seemed a little too safe. Its amazing how colour completely changes the mood.

I was asked to draw a portrait in memory of a very close friend who we sadly and very unexpectedly lost just a few days ago....
Usually this job is something i would enjoy and find very comfortable to do, but in this case it was not so easy.
I think i must have tried at least 3 or 4 attempts to try and get it right. I have found it so very difficult as i think i am still in so much shock at our loss. Sandy has always been like a 2nd Mum to me. I have grown up, knowing her all my life and am deeply saddened by our tragic loss.
I am still not very happy with this portrait, as i dont believe i have captured my friend perfectly. My usual attention to detail is lost and my pencil work is shabby.
Looking back, i feel i have been lazy in areas and i am not happy with lack of detail in areas where i think it is really needed. I plan to draw a new portrait when i am in a better frame of mind. I think at this moment in time, i am still in a deep amount of shock. Only time will heal my pain.
May Sandy, mother of Thomas and William, Rest in Peace. I will always be there to help guide your boys and never forget all the wonderful memories we shared. May you watch over us and your spirit live on. Thank you for all that you have taught, given, shared and have done for us. I love you so much and miss you every day. The world needs more people like you. God Bless you Always. Forever and Ever, Amen.x

Bug Catcher & a Happy Mistake

I accidently started animating "Banjo Raccoon" with out actually realizing it. I was flipping between 2 different drawings to see what expression looked better in a yawn.... Eye Brows UP? or Eye Brows DOWN?? Next thing i knew, i was throwing drawings inbetween the drawings i had already done and my little raccoon friend started coming to life.
This is a bit of fun and nothing serious. Its nothing i'd use to sell myself, just a happy mistake that kept me quite for an afternoon.

I was given the brief from "Disney Consumer Products" to draw an original Disney Character in 3 different Poses.
I came up with my own original theme and concept of taking Mickey Mouse and putting him in the pose, costume and setting of 3 different Classic Disney Heroes.

Since finishing the brief, I have continued to create further concepts and designs for my "Disney - Hero" theme, just for fun.
